Spill the beans Big Daddy! How do you make the bumps with the groomer??
-Adam
|
Adam, Adam, Adam,
Do magicians give up their tricks? Do chefs give out their recipes? I just can't do it brother! The great stone tablets of grooming knowledge may only be passed on to another groomer...after taking the secret oath...and other scary stuff.

How does such a big machine go down really steep hills like Upper Gunbarrel and not tip over? -Patrick
|
Hi Patrick, Well, its all in the design. The tracks are each 5' wide, the center of gravity is low and when you have the blade and the tiller down, it's pretty solid. It will slide on the steeper stuff so it can be a wild ride brother!

Is snow making possible when the actual temperature is above freezing but
the wind chill is below freezing?
- Craig
|
I'll let you in on a little secret brother, wind chill has absolutely no effect on the temperature! It is simply a guestimate of how the temperature would feel against bare skin. Unless you're skiing in the buff, wind chill has zero effect on anything. But it sounds real good when the news says the wind chill is a zillion below zero, when the actual temperature is somewhere in the 20's or 30's!
With that being said, there are times when we can make snow above 32 degrees, sort of. There are two measurements of temperature - dry bulb (which most people and weather reports use) and wet bulb (which snowmakers and other strange people use). Wet bulb takes humidity into account. If the air is very dry, it acts like colder air for our purposes. Sometimes, when humidity is low, the dry bulb may be say 34, but the wet bulb may be 28 or so, so we can make snow at dry bulb "34". Confused? Well it really works that way!

why are you so cool? And how did you become so good at makeing bumps?
- Tyler
|
Well, it takes patience and practice. I you try to rush it, they ain't gonna happen!

When it is as windy as it has been...how does that affect the snowmaking? I`d think you might end up covering the trees before the ground! - Micah
|
Good question Micah. Yes, wind is a factor. When it's really blowing, we have to work hard to be sure the snow lands where we want it to. Lesser snowmaking teams at other mountains may call it a night and go cry to their mamas, but our experienced team laughs in the face of heavy wind...ha, ha, ha...they know how to work with the wind to make great snow.

Weather looks promising for some serious snowmaking the next few weeks! how much longer will we be tourtured with no snow big daddy! BRING ON THE WHITE STUFF
think snow!
-Zach
|
Hey Zach,
We're ready. Looks like colder weather shows up next week and we'll do our best to make lots of snow. It won't be long now brother.
|
Why do they call you big daddy, when you're a short guy?
- John
|
It's because I'm bigger than life brother!
|
I've been searching around the site and I even called the customer service line but I just can't seem to find when roundtop opens for snowboarding!! When will the mountain be ready for snowboarders and what are the open hours? Also, I heard about a season pass discount for college students and I was wondering about that. If you could send
me a link to the season schedule and some information on the college pass, it would be greatly appriciated! Thank you big daddy!

Hey Ashley,
Yes, we have a student pass. Check out http://www.skiroundtop.com/passdetail.htm . We usually open in early December, as soon as the weather allows. I'll be sure we're the first to open in the region!
